Cooking Without a Recipe

I've become one of those people – people who cook without a recipe. I never thought it would happen. All the years that I've been cooking, I've always used recipes. Always. If I didn't have a menu plan and a recipe, I didn't make dinner.

But things are different these days. David's diagnosis of IBS meant that I had to change the way I cooked. There are recipes that accommodate his needs, but most of the time I find it's easier just to make up my own.

When I go to the grocery store, I have a list of the basics we're out of. Otherwise, I pretty much just shop the perimeter of the store. I buy fruits, vegetables, dairy, and meat. I get a few other things from the middle aisles, but mostly of it is from the edges. I buy the same things week after week but just try to fix them different ways. As long as I have the basics, I can usually come up with something.

Tonight's menu is a good example. I made ground turkey veggie burgers with whatever veggies I had on hand. I made twice baked potatoes using bacon crumbles and chopped spinach. I also microwaved some baby carrots.  It was a simple meal but definitely not boring.

I still use recipes and I still have a menu plan of sorts but it's nothing like the way it used to be. Yes, I miss those days of trying a new recipe every night and making bread and dessert and all that but it is what it is.

So here I am. I'm cooking without recipes and making things up. If you had told me five years ago I would be doing this, I would've told you you were crazy.

Do you cook with recipes or make up your own meals?
